CFPR Introduction

The main focus of research at the CFPR concerns the development of quality fine print, this is primarily undertaken from a fine art perspective. We recognise however, that print is inexorably linked to industrial development so therefore we are also equally comfortable with conducting research from an industrial perspective.

The centre is committed to the dissemination of its research through education, training, professional practice, collaborative projects, conferences, and the publication of research outcomes. Our print activities span the various disciplines within the field of art and design. Recent examples of research have included the appraisal and development of water based screenprinting inks. This has also led to the development of safer water based techniques for printing decals for ceramics and metal.

The reappraisal of forgotten printing processes and standards in the light of modern technological developments is another important part of our research. This includes practical and theoretical studies of high quality 19th Century printing processes such as Woodburytype, Collotype, Photo ceramic relief casting and photogravure. We also undertake research into artist quality digital output, with a particular emphasis on wide format printing.

During the 10 years of our existence we have steadily gained a reputation as a centre of excellence with both the international print community and industry. The Centre for Fine Print Research is situated alongside the Print Centre at the School of Creative Art's Bower Ashton Campus, sharing its extensive studio facilities. Since our formal establishment in 1994, we have expanded into a large research group with a staff of twenty, plus doctoral research students. Both individually and collectively this offers us a wide range of practical and theoretical expertise within our field of research.

Some of our funding sources include, The Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB), The Teaching Company Directorate as well as Hewlett Packard's Art and Science Philanthropy Fund.
